I want to replace a residential mercury thermostat with a digital thermostat. I have an system with AC and a 2 stage heat pump and can only find one thermostat model at Home Depot with this option. The thermostat needs a Common wire to power the thermostat and does not take batteries. Is it possible to add a common wire to accomplish this?

Yes you will have to run a new wire, actually I believe all multi stage heat pump thermostat have a common. Even most mercury ones. Are you sure you don’t have a common? most heat pump thermostats use light bulbs that require common’s

The wire appears to be an 8 or 10 count wire, with 6 of the colors being used. The mercury thermostat does have several lights for emergency heat, auxilary heat and a 3rd which I can't recall offhand. Is there a way to check for common with a multi meter or other tester?
