we have a ruud heat pump and thought the thermostat was bad cause you can turn it to manual or off and it keeps on running. you have to go to unit in closet and turn it off there. in the winter we turned it on and it would be really hot upstairs by morning. now it seems to be cooling some but it stays on . we repalced thermostat and it still is doing this.

tammyb:if you have a relay it seems that the relay is sticking close if you have a sequencer it could be sticking in the close position

My first thought is that the contactor in the heat pump is sticking on.

What keeps running? The indoor unit or the outdoor unit?
Or is it a split system?

the inside unit stays on. i thought the outside was staying on also, but i turned up thermostat above what it was on and outside unit went off.

Probably just a stuck relay. Give it a good hard whack on the side with a baseball bat.
