I have a Comfortmaker Heat Pump/Air conditioner model # HPSO24A2C2...... About a month ago we had to have this unit recharged because the previous owner did not properly level out the outside unit. So it started to lean forward which caused the seal around the copper tubing to break and all the refrigerant to leak out. We had that repaired. Ran the unit for two days, everything ok. We did not run it for almost a month. After the unit was turned on it ran good for a few hours then the cool air stopped coming out of the vents. We had it looked at and the service guy said the compressor is SHOT. This unit is barely 5 years old. Now what? Any advice whould be great

spyderdezigns: when a system leaks out freon also leaks oil if the unit leaked alot of oil it is just like running an engine without oil the motor locks up,same with the compressor for an air conditioning unit. you have to ask the service tech. what he meant by saying: "the compressor is shot"it can be locked or it can have grounded windings or it can have open windigs. now if it had the open windings and it was just the common side chances are that the compressor over heated and opened the internal overload in the compressor, now the compressor can over heat if is locked or working with low freon charge,if it is locked you can probably try to unlock it with a "hard start kid"this consists of a potential relay,a start capacitor, but you have to know how to hook it up to the wiring of unit if you want to know if the compresor runs and not get confused if it is your fan or compressor running, disconnect the fan's common wire to keep the fan from runnig and you will be able to hear the compresor run don't let it run for more than 10 seconds as soon as you hear the compressor run turn it off than you will know tha the compressor is not the problem. one other thing if the compressor is not pumping freon it can over heat also and the valves ar bad you have a bad compressor if the compressor is locked and can't be ulocked with hard start kit,if windings are open or if it doesnot pumps freo(bad valves)i hope this helps you.

The air conditioner was not used for almost a year before we bought the house.

What was wrong with it? IF it was hot when being tested it's possible it may be OK when it's cooled down.

The unit was tested the next morning. So it was not hot.

If was siezed you could try a supper boost, however it sounds like you will be changing the compressor.
