My husband and I have recently decided to add A/C to our home. We have had quit a few estimates. It seems as though most contractors want to put in a new furnace too, although one was willing to just upgrade the furnace, ie put on a new blower. Our furnace is 16 years old. Is this old for a furnace? Will the A/C kill it? We're just not sure if a new furnace is a wise investment for us right now. We don't plan on living in our house for more than a few more years. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure. All I know is that it is the original furnace that was built with the house. I'll have my husband crawl into the crawl space and look tonight and I'll get back to you with that information.

If it's 16 it will atleast require a motor upgrade.

On the average, enough advances are made after 15 to 20 years where you will get a more efficient unit and save operating costs. Upgrading the blower system can be done, but many times that is like putting fuel injection into a Model T Ford. Not a big gain and a chance of compatability problems.
If you are going to spend the money, replace the furnace, its 16 years old, and you will get a system where the controls were made for each other.

On a side note, you will have a slightly higher resale value on a matched system than a miss matched upgrade
