i moved in to an 18+ years old apt building unit. it has a very very old Carrier Air Conditioner(last service record was in 93). heat worked fine and got us through last winter. however the AC doesn't work as good. the cool air was never really cool, and as the outside temp goes up it's not even cool anymore. i checked the bottom (where air goes in) it's all dirty and dusty and sticky. i tried to vaccum but seemed useless.
what troubles me the most is that today when i turned on the ac (switched to cool, temp. set at 70), few minutes of not so cool air later, the emer heat light came on! why? what's broken? i bought a new homeowner insurance that covers HVAC unit with a 500 deductable. should i make the call?

Mike I believe the light coming on is notifying you of a problem. If you do not own refrigeration gauges or a meter I would recommend calling for service.
