Have an 8 yr. old rheem furnace and finally got a rheem A/C
unit last year. Thermostat is 8 yr. old programmable Honeywell/34 Model CT3400. Has been working fine until I noticed this evening the A/C not putting out properly and finally discovered that after A/C is on for short time, furnace comes on! I had system switch on COOL but thermostat indicated
HEAT ON and both were going full bore. I suspect the thermostat is the problem because of the "HEAT ON" indication
with system switch on COOL and it's 8 yrs. old. Is it typical for thermostats to go bad in 8 yrs?

For a test disconect the W wire, and run the unit. if the heat runs it's not the thermostat.
