I just purchased an installed two Ritetemp 8085 programmable thermostats for upstairs and downstairs. Initially, they seemed to work like a champ (i.e. Condensation on the windows -- nice and cold...).

The one downstairs will no longer cool the house as before when I had the old White-Rodgers thermostat installed. In fact, it only blows fan, non-compressed air. 82 degrees (Agh!!!). I changed batteries, pressed the reset button and still no can do.

I checked the wiring on both units (actually disconnected the wiring and started again by the numbers). No change in temperature. My wife is NOT a happy camper because it's rather balmy in the house.

Can you please help? Thanks.

One quick question. Did you have the power to the furnace/airhandler turned off before you changed thermostats? If not, good chance you may have shorted out a transformer or fuse. Any wires that you might have been in "question" as to where they went on the Ritetemp stats? If you crossed a couple of wires, again you could of shorted something out. A quick test would be to jumper your R (usually red wire) and G (usually Green wire) together and see if the fan comes on. If it does, turn power off and go back over all your wires and wiring connections. If it doesn't, you probably shorted a transformer, control board, or blew a fuse depending on your make and model of furnace/airhandler. Good luck!

I apologize for being such a novice. I normally build computers.

Both are Carrier units. I don't know if I sctually turned off the furnace/airhandler before I changed the thermostats. I went to the fuse box and turned off the switches for both units. Would the power to the furnace/airhandler be another fuse in additional to the one that I switched off?

About the wiring...
I did jumper the R and G cables, and the fan DID come on. On the old White Rodgers thermostat, the RH and RC were connected together. And on the RiteTemp out of the box, the RH and RC also were connected.

What is your recommended approach to rewiring the connections?

If you jump R to G and Y and if the unit starts, it's a thermostat problem. If it dosen't it's a unit problem.

Xenos.
