Reversing Valve Repair? - http://www.hvacmechanic.com/ Forums

All,
I have a Bryant heat pump system that is about 5 years old. This summer I replaced a burned out a compressor. Carrier gave me one for free even though I was out of warentee. Now I have turned my heat on for the winter and all that I have is Aux heat. My local HVAC folks say it is a bad reversing valve stuck in the cooling mode.
Now being a mechanical engineer (hydraulics), and a guy that tries to fix everything, I am looking for a way to unstick this valve. I have tried switching back and forth from AC to heat and lightly taping it with a rubber mallet while in the heating mode. So far no luck. Perhaps I should switch to a metal hammer and tap harder?
I am not sure of my next step. Can anyone give me a procedure, or a few pointers on un-sticking this valve before I spend $600 to get it replaced?
Thanks in advance, Boyd

For some reason the valve appears to have corrected itself yesterday. The unit is blowing warm air and the Aux heat indicator is not on. Could there be any other scenerio other then the valve moving?
Also, Should I cycle to AC and back a few times to keep the valve moving, or should I wait until summer to try my luck?

Have you checked to see if you have voltage to the coil on the reversing valve.

Yes, I have 24v across the coil in cooling mode. I did not check to see if the coil was functioning. Is there an easy test for that? Is it resistance across the terminals?

Thats strange sice they normaly fail in heating as they are powered to cool. Are you sure the heat pump charge is correct?
Xenos.
The best way to escape a problem is to solve it.

Before getting the heavy hammer, I'd get the valve part number and do research regarding how it's designed to work. I'd also check the HP's wiring diagram to see in what mode, AC or heat, you should expect to find the coil energized. Once you understand how it's intended to work, you'll be able to find a solution.
