My Rheem furnace will not start. The gas valve gets the needed 24V to open and it does make the noise as if it is opening but the furnace never lights. The hot surface ignitor seems to be working fine as it gets very bright and looks hot. The 24 volt goes to the gas valve for about 5 seconds and then shuts off as I think it should because there is no flame. I never smell gas and it seems to me I need to replace the gas valve.

Is there anything else I should check before I replace the gas valve for $163.40?

Life is too short to be cold

Are u sure u have gas to the gas valve? If so and u have 24vac to gas valve and no safty to block it then it has to be the valve.

Gas valve or no gas. Only two options if the valve is getting 24v. Unless the burners are dirty and gas is not properly hitting the ignitor. I've seen this on in-shot type burners numerous times. You would still probably hear the sound of gas flow through the burners.
