Hi,

One more question about my 9-year-old Janitrol heat pump.

I really don’t like the hear pump idea very well. My friend told me that I could switch the heater position to Emergency to by-pass the heat pump. However, since my indoor air handler is equipped with electrical heater, when I switch to Emergency, air coming out of it will be cold for the first 60 – 90 seconds. (I was told that’s a sequence to protect the heating panels from being overheated.)

So my question is, if I have to change out my 9-year-old Janitrol heat pump, could I replace it with a condenser only unit without causing system problems? Secondly, if I get rid of a heat pump and then install a condenser only unit, how could I eliminate or shorten that “cold air” period?

Note: My friend has a gas furnace for his indoor unit so he does not have that initial “cold air” problem when switch the heater mode to Emergency. My heater is electrical.

Regards.

I actually wonder of the Emergency heat Terminal E is conected to W2 on the themostat.

Xenos.

The best way to escape a problem is to solve it.

Well first i u got rid of the heat pump outside unit it will cost u much more to run the heater. The problem with the electric heat coming on cold at first may because the thermostat brings on the fan immediately upon calling for heat. What type of thermostat do u have.
Goodman a cheep units and normally installed cheeply have u had someone check the charge.
To your first and main question, Yes u can but i dont recommend it. There is a switch u can get that will bring on electric heat if the outside temperature gets below the effective range for heating.

Stick with the heat pump. You'd be silly not too. I agree with mastertech about the t-stat turning the fan on immediately upon a call for heat.
