Is it okay to mix brands of equipment? We've been told that Carrier/Payne has the best inside heat pump unit, and Trane/Amer. Standard has the best outside unit. Will these two work together efficiently, or should we go with one or the other?

You can mix and match but you'll not know the exact SEER rating of the system. Manufacturers advertize SEER based on their lab tests using certain condensers with certain coils. An 11 SEER, 2.5 ton Trane XR 11 (2TTR1030) is only an 11 SEER system when used with a Trane TXC031S3 coil. That's an expensive coil with a non-bleed thermostatic expansion valve. Now that same condenser when matched with a Trane TXC031C4 (Accu Tron flow control, not TXV) is only 10 SEER. The reason for the lower SEER is a different coil, even though made by Trane. In general, to get closer to the condenser SEER rating, use a bigger coil with an TXV. If humidity control is an issue, forget SEER altogether and go for a slightly smaller coil with a TXV.

I recomend the same as well, these companys have spent a fortune in matching their systems.
