OK I have an old Bryant Winter Air Conditioner Gas furnace....
Starting last year it started making what sounded like Grinding noise from the ignitor(?)... like the switch is freaking out...
for a while i could just tap the thing and it would work for awhile... today I finally pulled the assembly out and discovered quite a bit of crud on the metal plate next to the pilot flame... I cleaned that off and put it back in.. it no longer does anything...

sorry if my terminology is wrong, this is a very simple set-up. just wondering if I should replace the whole assembly or just some parts of it....
I will reply immediately if you need more info
thanks
Jon

I can do it honey....

sound, kinda like a grinding noise, real load....

I can tap the pilot to get it to start for a second but
it won't stay lit...

Man is that old. I guess the first question is, is the igniter powered ? if not check the limit.

The age of this thing is pretty much my problem... I can't find parts info on it... I imagine there are generic parts... the combination control box is a honeywell, so I imagine I might be able to find something there...

is there a way to test the limit switch or bypass it...
the only wires in the system seem to be the white/red
from transformer which end up with the limit switch in the middle...
another thing that might point to the limit switch is that the fan works in manual mode but does not seem to work at all in automatic...

I can do it honey....

We still see a few of those on boilers here. It sounds like the pilot safety function has failed. Those pilots are still available. If you jumper across the two wires going to the pilot assembly and the main burner comes on, you need a new pilot assembly. DO NOT RUN THE FURNACE LIKE THIS FOR ANY LONGER THAN IT TAKES TO TEST!!!

Another day in paradise

yeah... I jumpered and it kicked on... (which means the swith is no good...Correct???)
so next question is how to locate this assembly...
is there a specific name for it...
might there also be something a little more modern to
replace it with...

thanks for all your help by the way...
