I have a old williamson ( temp o matic ) i think . well any way the fan motor started making a loud humming sound and then stoped working now it just hums. it trys to turn the squrell cage but then it just stops. the motor is mounted on the side of the cage and has a belt. i aslo can move the cage just fine , so i dont thinik its seized. i was wondering about the capacitor and how to check it the right way. i you can help me or tell me where to start i would b thankfull.

With an amp meter, you can use this formula to check your capacitor... running amps A= V x MF/2650. However, even if the capacitor is within specification, if the motor is bad you'll want to replace the capacitor anyway. I suggest replacing the capacitor and hope that's the problem. If the motor is bad, you already have the new capacitor for your new motor. Assuming the capacitor on your motor is from the motor OEM, be sure to buy a a capacitor with identical capacitance and an operating voltage equal to or greater than the one written on the old capacitor.
