the saga began one year ago - i bought a new house in south carolina with a Heil heat pump first - the zone board went out second - the reverse pressure valve went out (unit froze solid) third - the heat strips had to be replaced fourth - the duct work had to be replaced fifth - and to the current problem THE UNIT MAKES TWO HORRIBLE SOUNDS WHEN IT SHUTS OFF - 1) A LOUD AND LONG OUT-GASSING SOUND AND 2) A GRATING SOUND LIKE THE FAN IS SCRAPING THE SHROUD
The good folks that installed the unit tell me those sounds are normal and everything is fine with the unit I'm thinking a) it never did it before b) the last house with heat pump didn't do it c) no other houses in our 'hood with Heil heat pumps can be heard from a 100 yards away d) the guy that told me there are two counter-rotating fans in the unit didn't look like i did - there's only one 3-blade fan in there and it appears to turn freely and is not hitting or scraping anything when the unit is turned off
QUESTIONS: Am I being taken for a ride? Does anyone have a thought or two on these problems? Do I need a second opinion? Should I just move and ignore it? I sure wish someone can shed some light on these problems. Thanks for the time and effort.

I work on alot of Tempstar heat pumps, which are the same as Heil pumps. In my opinion, if the ductwork had to be replaced (too small, falling apart) that would contribute to the heat strips going out. Some boards on the older heat pumps did have weak relays, and have been upgraded. As to the noise problems, when the unit does shut off, the gas (Freon) has to equalize, so the noise may be the gas pressures equalizing in the line set. The grating sound very well be a loose fan mount. When the motor slows down, the loose mount may let the fan blade (squirrel cage) rub against the blower housing. This assembly would be in the furnace in the house. Maybe a low voltage solenoid installed in the line set would quiet down the gas noise.
Don't give up! A successfull repair feels soooooo good!!
