I need to know how to tell if my TXV is bad or faulty. It is 15 years old. I have a site glass on the liquid line and check my charge periodically. Some times it clears fast and sometimes it may take awhile to clear. When it has a substantial load it seems to clear fast. I just had my Condenser unit changed out and I am worried about flood back if the TXV fails. If I change out the TXV should I change out the evap coil too? I don't want to replace the whole unit since it seems ok and it is a gas heated unit. any suggestions?

Dan

The fact that some times the glass clears fast and some times it doesnt just a fact of load. I would not change out an TXV for a unit that is more then 5 years old. I would change the whole coil.(especially if it leaks or u think it leaks)

One possibility might be a TXV being wide open all the time (bad bulb) in which case it's acting like a piston/orifice flow control device. As long as the new condenser is the same tonnage as the old and the TXV was sized correctly, no need to worry although your efficiency will suffer. If your superheat is fluctuating then you have a bad TXV. As far as flood-back, as long as you use subcooling as your means of determining correct charge, you'll should be okay. Your only concern would be if any debris entered the piping when the condenser was changed giving you partial restriction. As long as it cools like before and the superheat is constant, you're most likely fine so don't worry.
