Hi,
It is 5 degrees C today and this Canadian needs a new furnace before the snow flies! I'm interested in unbiased recommendations. House is about 1500 sq/ft (not incl. bsmt), two storey, 10 windows.
High or mid efficiency? BTUs? Two stage? Carrier, Trane, Lennox, other?
Thanks!

Well I don't know about in the US, but hear in Canada Carrier high eff. 2stage (mod. 58mvp) is tops on energy saving and less no heat calls!!(thats my view anyways). Pricy but I think its worth it.

High would probably pay for itself. BTU's is entirely dependent on what YOUR house requires - info in link above. 2-stage would tend to provide more comfort. All good names, installed more important than name. Great name can be ruined by a bad installer.

Thanks for the input. I got written estimates on three products; Trane, Carrier and Lennox (for a mid eff, 2-stage, gas unit...our home is too small to make a high eff unit cost effective). After reviewing the different options we are leaning toward going with Trane.
Trane is made by American Standard (AS) and according to Consumer Reports, AS was #1. Trane #3 rated slightly higer than Carrier #6 and significantly higher than Lennox #10 in terms of number of repairs. Estimates on all three systems (with humidifier, programable thermostat, and updating B-vent for my hotwater tank) were within a few $ of eachother...about $3600CDN.
I was generally impressed with each product and expect that all units are quite reliable. That said, the selling point for us became the warranty. Trane came with a 10 year parts and labour (through Home Depot), Carrier five (through Sears) and just one year for Lennox (unless you want to pay another $150/yr). Now if I can only get it installed before it snows...lookin' forward to some heat!
