I have a Carrier boiler with a Beckett Oil Burner. I went to start it for the seanson and no go. Went through the checklist of the usual suspects and have it narrowed down to the motor not turning on the burner. During the troubleshooting, I opened the fuel bleeder to make sure the unit was gettin fuel and nothing. But when I back off the supply connection...plenty!. Does this mean the motor is shot? And Can I replace the motor or do I need to replace the entire unit? Its cold in NY today!!!
Thanks!

Hold the flue damper open and see if you smell fuel oil. When the motor first starts, you should be able to hear the solenoid open allowing the fuel to flow to the nozzle. If there's no fuel oil smell in the firebox then it appears the oil pump may be the problem. To be sure, get a coffee can and place it under the bleeder valve on the fuel pump. Open the bleeder on the pump when the motor is running and there should be a good stream of fuel. Are you sure you're getting a good spark?

I have a Tjerlund powerventer that kicks on and I hear a click but I smell no oil and hear no spark. I tried the bleeder and when its open and the safety swicth is flipped no fuel oil comes out? Is the pump shaft turned by the blower motor? Is there a way to tell if it is the motor and not the pump? Any thoughts? THANKS!!!

You have two distinct motors. One is in the power venter, the other is in the oil burner. You can hear the power venter motor. You have to try and listen and hear (or not hear) the oil burner motor. I have a feeling it's not starting. Put your hand on the motor and you should feel it vibrate a little if it's running.
If the oil burner motor isn't running, the oil pump (connected to the motor shaft along with the blower wheel) will not pump oil nor will you get spark.
I have a feeling there's a safety system whereby the Tjerlund power venter isn't achieving the necessary draft pressure to allow the oil burner to start. See if the oil burner motor is wired through the power venter. Maybe a simple cleaning of the power venter hose/switch/system will get you power to the burner. Unfortunately I have no idea how it's wired, I'm only speculating.

I get the felling Freon that you have been down this road before!! You are correct about the the powerventer as a safety mechanism but I took off the suction tube that is in the flue and blew through it to make sure it was clear. That got the venter to turn on which in turn should allow the burner to fire. But alas no go... the burner motor is not humming or vibrating. I guess where I am going with this is can I replace just the motor or is there a way to check to see if I am getting spark first. Let me know!

Ah HAAAA! I found the culprit!!! Upon investigating why the burner motor had no power, I came across ANOTHER thermocouple heat sensor in the flue. I hit the reset button that was hidden up in the wiring box of the powerventer and it kicked on!
I appreciate your help Freon Thanks!!!
