What happens when a heat pump with a gas backup goes into defrost?
I know about switching it to cooling mode, but what happens in order to stop cold air from going into the conditioned space?

Different system operate differently, some allow both the heat pump and gas to operate at the same time, others don’t, and yes the indoor air temp can drop during a defrost.
