In our rental home, we have a older model Moncrief gas furnace. First snow of the year, and it will not work! The pilot is lit, but when I turn up the thermostat nothing happens???!! Burners will not ignite, any ideas on what the problem could be? Can this problem be narrowed down to one paticular problem? Thank you in advance for any help that you may be able to give me.

Generally a jumper across T T on your gas valve (i.e. where your thermostat is connected) will either open the gas valve or not. If the burner lights, it is the thermostat or wiring to it. If it doesn't light, the gas valve. With the thermostat calling a few taps on the gas valve with the rubber handle of a hammer (no metal) may start it as when they are layed up they sometimes get a little "sticky" when putting the furnace back in service. If that doesn't work a new gas valve may be in order.

Hope this helps. I'm sure there are others familiar with this particular unit that can help more.

As i read my reply it strikes me that i'm assuming after you lit the pilot light you turned the the gas valve to "on." Check that. If the pilot stays lit, the thermocouple is working. Did you leave the pilot light on all summer?

Yes, Ted, I did leave the pilot on all summer, it's the first time I have ever done that. I will try tapping the gas valve with a rubber hammer. I guess I wasn't sure if the thermostat was not sending a signal to the valve to open...could that also be a possibility? Also, one more thing, the furnace worked fine yesterday! Ted, thanks for your responses.

Probably not a good idea to jump gas valve. Unless you know where and how. Good way to smoke a tstat. Do not replace parts until you have verified a problem. Do you have a volt meter. If yes take a read at the gas valve with t'stat calling for heat. Should have 24 volts

If you don't have a millevolt stat then it is a good idea to check for 24 VAC. There should be a transformer around someplace if it is 24 volts. If you are worried about hurting the stat (i'm not) disconnect it from T T and jump it to see if it lights. If the pilot light is staying on, you have 24 volts, the furnace worked recently and it doesn't light when you jump T T, you need a gas valve.

Ted, will try that, I'm not worried about the thermostat either...cheap, compared to a valve :)THANK YOU!!!
