Help, The first night this winter it gets down to single digits and I come home to a cold house and humming blower fan.
The burners light, get hot and switch on the blower fan but it just humms and the moter is hot and the house smells like burnt blower moter, kinda like burnt hair but not as bad. after it hums a bit, the burners shut down and then try again in about 10 min.
Ive turned it off, let it cool off good and tried again an hour later but it does the same. Ive tried to spin the blower fan by hand with it off but i can just barely get it to move and it seems to be scrapping, is there a break when its off?
Of course I've already spent any hopes of having extra money for the holiday on vet bills recently and am afraid of the repaiman costs but need heat.

Ok, So far this is proving to be easier then anticapted. There are two rails or slides for the top seams of the duct housing which holds the blower motor and fan. Two screws holding the front of these rails was all I had to take out and the whole assembly was able to slide out easily. I Had to cut a tie-wrap to loosen the wires and only had to disconect three of them from the circuit board. plus unscrew another ground wire.
In minutes I had the whole assembly in front of me on the floor of my limited space. I'd have been a bit peeved if I had called a repair man out and then saw how easy it was to get at. (sorry guys who make a living at this, I hope theres still enough people out there who wouldn't dare touch there brokin furnace to keep you busy)
Upon loosening the blower motor from the houseing, I discovered that the squirl cage had become jammed against the duct housing some how. The fan spins freely when i lossened the motor from the mounting brackets. There must be some way i can adjust this and put it back together, maybe my motor isnt fried? However, when i try to bolt the motor back into the houseing, the end of the fan still rubs against the duct housing. I needed a wrench to loosen the squirl fan from the shaft on the moter to see if I can adjust it back a tad that way. Just stoped by here again to update you all on my progress. and see if any one had offered advice yet.

Alright, I fixed it :)
Even though none of you had a chance to reply, This forum gave me the confidence I needed. and it wasnt really that hard.
The bolt that holds the squirl fan blades to the motors shaft was loose. Apparently the motor shaft is threaded cause I couldnt get the fan to move farther back or up and off the motor shaft untill I spun the fan while holding the notched shaft with a cresent wrench. I had to spin it quite aways back, untill it was able to move freely inside of the duct housing. Tightend down the lock bolt, slid the whole thing back inside the furnace, which proved a bit more difficult then sliding it out but it was do-able and now done. pluged the wires back into the board, it's labled, and screwed the ground wire back into the sheet metal. Flip the on switch and MMMM heat :)
I'm ready for Minnesota's worst again. I imagin I'll be back here again soon as I've read here that the Goodmans quality is questionable and it apears this furnace was installed in 1994.

Ok, I'm coming down from panic mode and ready to go try and take out the blower moter, it's a vertical unit with the blower at the bottom. It looks like it is gonna be tough getting at it. I have a little mechanical aptitude and if it gets to tough, my wife is a machine adjuster at a bullet factory so I may have to give her an excuse to come home early today.
in the mean time ... Any sugestions from those with experiance in this endeavure will be much appreacited for I'll probably be back to check if i get stuck or end up taking apart more then I need to.
Thanks
Don
