Help...I am a renter and have been having problems with my furnance. Last year my landlord replaced the thermostat and this year as soon as the cold weather hit the thermostat wasn't reading a temp. Once the landlord fixed that problem another one came along...my pilot light won't stay on. The gas comes on but the pilot light keeps going out. I would think that my landlord owning the property would have this looked at but no such luck. I have a 2yr old and a dog not to mention everything I own at risk. I plan on having this looked at, at my expense but I would like to do my homework first...any ideas as to why my pilot light won't stay on?????????

Usually one of two things. Both easy fixes. Your thermo coupler needs to be replaced or your pilot is getting plugged up at the tip so not enough flame is keeping your thermo coupler hot enough to keep the pilot on.

It should be a simple diagnosis and repair for a technician who is qualified so be sure you call someone who is recommended by friends of yours. But also check with your landlord first as he may have a company he uses. Next, you may have to pay for the repair. However, depending on your state's landlord-tenant laws, you should be able to deduct that cost from the next rent check. Again, check the local laws but usually there's an implied warranty that a landlord supply 'habitable' housing--meaning you get to be warm.
