Ok... My wife woke me up at 5:00 this morning, she was on the way out the door when she heard a noise coming from the Heat Pump and then a bunch of smoke, I told her to cut the thermostat off. Later on I removed the top side panel to check the capacitor and defrost board etc. everything looked fine no burnt marks or smell, so I am going to assume that the fan is the problem...How does one check to see if the fan is bad????? Any and all help greatly appreciated

Ryd

If it is cold where you are most likely the unit went in defrost. I can't tell you how many people have called me and told me that the unit was smoking. Another thing is you will here a noise at times, that ice hiting the fan when it comes out of defrost.

Most likely if it was in heat mode the system went into defrost mode. It would have sounded like a loud hissing sound and steam would have poured from the unit. But if you need parts or anything contact the guys at www.acwarehouseonline.com they will evan give advice or walk you through basic things.
