With the cost of natural gas is a heat pump more efficient than gas in the Greensboro North Carolina area?

First, the cost of natural gas should not be as high this year as last year.
There's no clear answer to your question as presented. Is this new construction or a replacement system?
If replacement do you want to keep your existing furnace? Do you want to install a new high efficiency gas furnace? How old is your existing a/c? How long will you be in this house? Does it make sense to spend 6,8,10K and you will sell the house in a year or two?
If your existing furnace is in good shape and your existing a/c 12,14 years old, there are savings if you install a heat pump on both heating and cooling. If you have a 20+ year old furnace and a fairly new a/c a high efficiency gas furnace may offer some savings.
