Howdy guys,
I bought my house new a year ago and from the get-go the return area has generated excessive noise when my heating and cooling unit runs (wind noise).
I don't know if it's normal for this unit to generate so much draw noise but when the unit's running I have to turn the TV up to the max in order to hear it properly.
None of the vents in the rooms are closed, and the filter is clean.
My guess is that it's caused by inadequate draw but I don't know why and it feels like I am getting reasonable draw when I am by the unit.
Bear with me on this; I am a total amateur who is just trying educate himself best as possible before brining in a pro. Any trouble shooting ideas are greatly appreciated.

Here is a test you can perform to see if you have enough return air. The furnace will have a removable door to the blower section. Temporarly remove the door and tape the door safey switch in the closed position so that the blower will start. Open any access you have from the house to the furnace to allow room air to find its way back to the furnace. Turn on the Cooling system or just the fan(not the heat). Check and see if the blower sounds much quieter. If so, call a qualified heating or cooling installer for an upgrade to your air distribution system. If not, call a heating and cooling technician to inspect the blower. Now do not forget to remove the tape and put the door back on the furnace.
If they don't find ya handsome nor handy surgery may help!

Do you just have the one return grille? How close is the return grille to where the furnace sits?

"Do you just have the one return grille?"
Yes, it's in the entryway.
"How close is the return grille to where the furnace sits?"
Pretty close (probably only a few feet from a floorplan perspective).

About what I suspected. If you want it quiet, there needs to be more ductwork between the furnace and the grille. Move the grille and make it a slightly larger one. It shouldn't be in an entryway anyway. What's up with that? Put it in an interior hallway.
