What a great forum. Thanks for setting this up.
I have an older model Rheem 10 Seer AC unit. For the second time this year it has frozen up. Two things led me to this conclusion - it was running constantly and wouldn't cool the house below 77 degrees. When I went into the furnace room, the large insulated line had some ice cubes on it. I have turned off the air conditioning and turned on the fan to help thaw it out.
I checked the unit about three hours after doing this and there was water on the floor letting me know the ice was melting. Being a little impatient, I turned everything back on to see if the unit would start blowing cold air. It did start to get cooler but when I went back into the furnace room and the large line was "chugging" almost making a sucking sound. I turned everything back off but the sound is bothering me. Could it be that everything hadn't unthawed or could this be an indication of another problem...i.e, a leak or low refrigerant or ?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Make sure your indoor coil and filter is clean! The noise you hear is possably refrigerant in the lines if your system is low on charge you can get that sound.Or if your coil was still frozen air wasnt moving and causr wierd sounds after making sure coil and filter is clean call a certified tech company in area you could have a large or small leak most of the time a good tech can find and repair quickly try to find a company that uses a price book flat rate for work up front alot of companys do this now to keep the customer from getting stiffed from an inexpierenced tech taking to long.Hope info helps.

I forgot to add make sure your indoor blower motor is running a bad capaciter or bad motor will cause your coil to freeze up due to no airflow
