My outdoor unit is a Trane XE1200 and my annual checkup indicated I need to replace the run and start components. This unit was installed in 2002 (model: TWP036C100A3). I don't have a parts list. The repair note indicates:
Run: 40/5 uF Start: 135-162 uF
I'd like to do this myself and want to ensure I have the correct parts. Can I download a manual/parts-list? Does anyone know what parts are the correct ones? Of course, I will verify at the time of install that the parts match.
Thanks!

The run capacitor(aluminum cylinder shape) is a dual capacitor meaning it's for both the compressor and fan. It's a very common unit and all HVAC stores will have it for around $15. The only other piece of data you need to specify is the voltage and that can be 370 or 440 volts AC. Be sure to let the condenser sit for 15 minutes before disconnecting the wires from the capacitor... they hold electric charge. Also, CAREFULLY mark all wire connections to the three top terminals of the capacitor: Herm, Fan, and Common
The start capacitor is most likely a BAYKSKT260. That's a Trane part number. Here is what it looks like and cost: http://cgi.ebay.ca/Trane-air-conditioner-Start-control-kit-BAYKSKT260_W0QQitemZ280067193562QQihZ018QQcategoryZ79623QQcmdZViewItem
I'm surprised the hard start kit is bad. I'd be very curious as to how the tech made that determination. The usual signs are bulging ends but that has a plastic case. Anyway if you choose to replace it, note it also connects to the spade connectors on the run capacitor.

I haven't observed yet and am just going by the inspection report. This indicates both are "leaking." If I do need to repalce the start cap, do I have to buy the entire hard start kit or can I just get the cap?
Thanks!

Depending on what your service invoice stated,if your Quote is correct your diagnosis is flawed. your start capacitor and potential relay are A set and should be replaced as such the start capacitor is a dry electrolitical component and has nothing that is liquid to leak!!! Look at run capacitor and check for oil. Size and part # for hard start are correct as quoted. hope this helps

On the hard start item, you can just get the cap. I'm not sure where. I would look at the old one and verify the capacitance/voltage and then call around.
