There is a loud clank from the condensing unit each time it shuts off. Unit works good and neighbor said it has always made that sound. Probability nothing fixable but curious what it could be.

Is it a scroll or reciprocating compressor? Scoll type can give a weird sound for just a sec when they shut off. A scroll is perfectly round whereas the recip is oval in shape as you look at the top.

Never get in a hurry!

What brand is the outdoor unit and model number?

Is the unit sitting level. Check the compressor mounting bolts. May be loose or rubber grommet shot.

It could be a pressure pulse much like you may have heard in your domestic water system when you close a valve very quickly.
