I think some thing was hit by lightning, I heard a pop and now the AC will not work. All that is running is the out side fan. Is there a switch or button that shuts off due to some sort of overload.

I agree with yuri but also if this was due to a lighting strike and your unit is fried your homeowners insurance can cover this expense so check with them also and they can send their own tech out to verify.Same thing happened to my sister after I verified it was fried.Just had to pay deductible $500 for whole new system,not bad.

Best to call a servicetech to check unit. You could have a blown capacitor or compressor or damaged circuit board in the furnace. If you keep trying to run it the compressor may burn internally and contaminate the system and make for some extremely expensive $$ repairs.
