My 10 yr old Trane XE90 is tripping the breaker every time the blower tries to start. The breaker is good. The motor starts to run, but within a second or two, trips the breaker. I don't see any melted wires or burnt areas, but something smells hot.
The main air conditioning circuit is not tripping. I've checked it with just the fan and everything else(heat and cool) turned off. My husband suspects the capacitor.

How can we tell if it's a capacitor or the blower motor?

Thank you for any assistance.

Heidi

If the capacitor is bad it's "just bad enough" to cause troubles and difficult to test. For $10, I'd replace it especially if it looks deformed--bulging anywhere.

The other possibility is a flakey circuit breaker... more expensive but still possible. If it's a 20 amp breaker and there are other 20 amp breakers in the box, you might consider swapping the breaker. Turn off the main breaker so there's no power to the entire panel.

We've already changed the breaker. Nothing wrong there. My husband went to buy a new capacitor and took the old one with him. The shop tested it and reported it was still good. They suggested looking for a yellow or white wire, removing it from the box and trying to turn the blower on. He removed the white wire from a connection named 'cir'. He restored power to the furnace and the fan operated well. He plugged it back in, and once again, the breaker tripped. Pulled the white wire again, and the blower worked perfectly with this wire out. We then turned on the air conditioning, and sparks flew from the motor and the breaker tripped. Guess we cooked the motor, and will now have to replace it, but still don't understand why the blower was operational with this wire disconnected. Any suggestions?

Thank you very much for your assistance.

My sugestion is to call a qualified tech to trouble shoot this. You are having a problem that cant be fixed by words on a screen you might have cost yourself more money and time already by trying to fix it yourself. Some things are easy but it seems you have a bigger problem than you expected.By having a tech come out at least you will have peace of mind.Good luck
