I have an older combination Rheem unit on my roof. When I set my thermostat to the heating mode, it does not turn on. I opened the sealed unit to discover it has an electronic ignition system. I turned and pressed down on the pilot button and it appears there is not gas present in the pipe after the control valve. Can it be a faulty control valve, a control module or a hidden fuse. Someone please help, my family is freezing. johnnyc

I'm a little confused. Usually with an electronic ignition system, the pilot is lit by a spart generated by the ignition control. On gas valves where you turn the knob to PILOT and press down, one usually has to use a match to light the pilot. Would you elaborate on the exact type of ignition you have? Maybe a make/model number for the gas valve and ignition control.

Often with electronic ignitions the gas valve will still have an on/off knob on top that can be pushed down. Pushing it only allows you to switch it on and off, it does not turn gas on to the pilot. Check your stat and make sure it works: Remove the wires from the 'R' and 'W' terminals on the furnace, or follow the thermostat wires to where they are connected. Use a jumper to connect 'R' and 'W', the burner should start. If not, check limit switches, combustion airflow switches, etc. Is the unit induced draft or natural? Make sure you note where wires were BEFORE you disconnect them.
