"Wiring Question On Heat Pump Thermostat" , posted Wed 12 Dec 00:35user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

I'm trying to replace an old thermostat with a Honeywell TH4210D thermostat on a Payne PF1MNC036 heat pump. I'm having problems with wiring. On the thermostat, I have the following terminals: C, B, R, L, O, G, Y, Aux, and E. The thermostat manual can be found here: http://customer.honeywell.com/techlit/pdf/69-0000s/69-1763.pdf

The wires to the heat pump are yellow, an off white grayish color, green, orange, red, brown, and blue. I know the unit does have aux. heat.

Any suggestions on how I need to wire this up? Do I need to go check the wiring to see how it is hooked up to the heat pump? If I get the wiring incorrect the first time is there a possibility of damage to the system or could I simply try again?

I would like to be able to figure this out but am willing to call a professional if needed.

I would sincerely appreciate any help offered. Thank you.

Can you list the terminals each of your old wires was connected to and the make and model of your old stat?

example...
Honeywell t87R with Q674L 1520 subbase (subbase is more important)
X = brown
B = blue
R = red....

Yes, you can cause damage to your system if you guess.

The system transfomer is in your fancoil (aka furnace, air handling unit). It is possible that more than 1 breaker serves your AHU (furnace).Turn off that (those) breaker(s).

While red is usually R
G is usually green
aux is usually white
Y is usually yellow
O is usually orange

C (common)? could be blue or brown.
E ?

The other end of your stat wire is at your fancoil. The stat wire will be the set using a green wire. The other wire set is from your heat pump outside.

Write down the color of each wire connected to each terminal (or pigtail) at your air handler. I especially need the blue and brown.

While your in the air handler, take note of weather or not you have a 5 amp blade type automotive low voltage fuse on the circuit board.

I'll take a look at that tonight, first thing when I get home. Should be able to get back to you around 7PM EST. I really appreciate the help! Would it be helpful to you if I also took a photo of the whole configuration and post a link to it?

Thanks again for assistance!

A picture would help.

I would still need the written terminal=color combination.

Ok - Here are some photos with detailed captions:

http://picasaweb.google.com/geff.ivey/HVACWiring

From the thermostat:
Red > R on circuit board
Brown > Nothing
Yellow > Yellow on wire appearing to go to heat exchanger
Green > G on circuit board
Blue > C on circuit board
Orange > Brown on wire appearing to go to heat exchanger
Off White > Spliced to blue, violet, white wires running in to an adapter. See photos for more info on this one.

Do you need any more information?

Thanks again for the assistance. I really, really appreciate it.

New terminal = wire
Aux & E = white (use a jumper wire)

If you forget to turn off power to your furnace, you might pop that 5 amp, blade type, low voltage, automotive fuse on your circuit board.

$3 a pack @ Autozone.

One other question I have - I just moved to this house and have little experience with this particular heat pump, but the air from the vents does seem a little warmer than what I've seen from other heat pumps. On the new thermostat, the unit is set to "heat" not "em heat". Is there any quick way I can verify that there is indeed no aux heat being used?

Thanks again for all your help!

Ok - Houston204 you're definitely a pro. I wired it all in just like you said, turned the power back on, and it appears to be working great.

Thanks for the giving me the help I needed! People like you are what make the internet such wonderful resource. I am so glad I was able to get this done myself. I would have felt like I gave up if I had to call in an HVAC person to the house.

Hi - thank you for the reply. I am really sorry but unfortunately, I made a really rookie mistake by unhooking the previous thermostat without recording what wires were hook to what terminal. I can tell you the previous thermostat was an Aprilaire 8346. On the circuit board it says 61008346 Rev M. G1N66052740709. Does this help at all?

Is it best to turn the power to the heat pump off at the main circuit breaker?

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
