If, during the second attempt at heating the house, the main burner only comes on for a few seconds and then stops only to try to light again, then try cleaning the flame sensor, if present.
However, if, during the second attempt at heating the house, the main burner comes on for a few minutes and then shuts down while the main blower is still running, you may have an overheating situation or a bad high limit control.
Be sure the filter is clean. Be sure all supply and return registers are fully open. Be sure the indoor evaporator coil (if you have AC) is clean. To reduce this overheating you need to insure good ait flow through the furnace.
If the air flow is good and the problem persists, you need to measure the ait temperature of the air leaving the furnace and compare it to the data (maximum temperature) on the furnace nameplate.
Post make and model number for better information.
