The wires leading to the ceramic insulator on the ignitor of my gas furnace (Trane XV80) melted and shorted out throwing the circuit breaker to the unit.
I removed the ignitor and on it has the Trane P/N 8340971. Trane tells me the "cross over" replacement is IGN 0117, but they won't sell it to me. I have contacted Steve Arnold from his web site after seeing it mentioned by others in your blog. I want to buy this replacement ignitor if it is the correct one.
Is it really the replacement ignitor for my furnace?
I had replaced the thermostat on that unit about a week ago. The old thermostat on the furnace was a 1979 Honeywell Chronomatic and I did not replace it with a Honeywell. Could the thermostat have caused the problem with the ignitor? The unit heated fine for a week. I thought a thermostat was just a fancy switch. It was wired the same way the original one was connected. Should I have put another Honeywell thermostat on the unit?
Seems I have lots of questions!

Sally

There are two other furnaces just like this one in my attic. I thought taking the ignitor from one of those and trying it in the one not working would tell me if the board is fried. What do you think about that? I would stand there and watch to see if ignitor would light the gas, then have the thermostat lowered to make sure the gas did not come back on after the cycle ended. I would remove the ignitor and put it back in the original unit so as not to burn it too. That would at least let me know if the circuit board is blown. The green and red lights on that board still indicate 1100 cubic foot of air and ignitor problems respectively. Would those LEDs still work if the board is blown?

Burnt wiring "can be suspect" to bad heat exchangers. When back up and running.,observe flame when house blower fan kicks on. If flame acts up.,start blowing back into cabinet etc.call a tech.
