I have a carrier furnace/ac outdoor unit. model # is 4855-024060331AA. The carrier site has no record of that model, but I'm sure it's right number.

So here's the problem: The furnace isn't always lighting. I've already cleaned the electrodes which generate the spark. When it doesn't want to light, there is hardly any spark at all, but when it does light there is plenty of spark light night and day.

The circuit board was replaced last year by a service man because it was doing the same thing. The only thing I've noticed is that it lights easily when the furnace has been running for a while and is hot. For no reason it stops wanting to light, and that's great at 2:00am when it's -2 degrees outside. I shut off the heater, wait a few hours or so, switch it back on and it works again some of the time.

Check the spark ignition assembly for cracks, it could be intermittently shorting to ground. Sounds like it's the board to me though. If it was replaced last year I would want to know what caused it to die in one year, could be flaky voltage from the panel, loose wires etc.

I'm afraid the model number you posted isn't a good model number.
If it's a Carrier, the first four digits might actually be 48SS (that would be a valid Carrier model number), but the remainder of the model number you posted looks like a Bryant or Payne one...which is actually pretty much the same as a Carrier I guess :p
Try searching Carrier for "48SS" and see what you get.

Last time the board was replaced because of a short which was visible as a black spot on the board. The model number is 48SS. I thought that was what I said.

It's looks identical to this one: http://www.commercialinstallations.com/Misc/heat.htm

I don't know how much good it will do you here, but here's a couple of manuals for your unit, in .pdf form.

Maintenance Instructions

Install / Service Instructions

That thing IMO is the worst design Carrier ever came up with for a gaspack unit.
