I just bought a house with a Payne heat pump. The Amana Thermostat is a mercury type, two stage heat/one cool. In cool mode the outdoor unit runs fine including compressor. In heat mode, only Hi Temp resistive heat works. Air handler cuts on in this mode also. There is 240 volt power to the unit in the heat mode, but compressor/outdoor fan fails to operate. Any ideas, tips?..thanks!

Check and see if there is a jumper wire from y to w on back of t-stat,y is your first stage of mechanical heat so when you have a heat call on w the jumper wire will power y without sending power to your reversing valve

Check voltage to contactor at outdoor unit. Could be a bad board in the outdoor unit. If there is a board, check voltage going into board first, then coming out of board. If no voltage getting to board, check wiring at indoor unit and tstat. If voltage getting to board, but not out bad board.
