My 7 year old Payne high-efficiency furnace has been experiencing "ignition lockout" from about the 3rd year. It comes and goes. No technician has yet been able to explain why. Gas pressure has been checked. Flame sensor has been cleaned etc etc etc. The description of this 1 & 4 code on the front panel reads "Control will auto reset in 3 hours". WHAT THE HECK DOES THAT MEAN?
Up to now, the only way to get heat is for me to turn off the power and turn it back on. But what happens if I go away during the winter months during a cold snap? Do I run the risk of having no heat at all and have my pipes freeze?

Clean your flame sensor and verify that your ground screws are tight. A microamp DC reading would be nice.

"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.

Thanks Houston,

Flame sensor was cleaned in November 2007. Don't know about ground screws and DC reading. That's for the technician. I am just a homeowner. Would the flame sensor need to be cleaned again so soon??

Can you tell me what "Control will be auto-set in 3 hours" means?
