Hi,

I recently bought a White-Rodgers thermostat, which replaced a Janitrol thermostat. Most of the wires were self explanatory but two were not and I have some questions regarding them.

1. I have a brown and white wire and open terminals "B", "W/E" and "W/2". From reading the directions on the White-Rodgers instructions, the "B" wire should be hot in heat, off and embergency mode. The white wire is hot in the off mode and the brown is not so I assume the white wire goes to "B".

2. When I hook it up with the white to "B" and the brown to "W/E"or "W/2" the heat pump doesn't work but the emergency heat does. I have tried it both ways (switching the brown and white) and in both cases there is 240VAC across both emergency heat coils but if I disconnect the emergency heat coils, there is no heat coming out of the heat pump system.

I know very little about HVAC but I am an electronic technician. About the heat pump, when it is in heat mode, is it the actual fan (what you can see from the outside) that should turn backwards or is it internal to the unit? Whether it's in heat or cool mode, the fan turns the same way.

Also, the cooling function works great so the problem is just with the heat pump.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris

There are two options for heat pump operation at the t-stat. B and O. If the is no terminal for O, then you will have to change the t-stat configuration, check the installation manual. Nothing runs mechanically backwards.

Post the model of your new stat and the make of your outdoor unit. If you have a janitrol unit outside, you will not use the B terminal.

(You probably want 1 set to HP1)

Hi,

The thermostat is model 1F95-1277 and I do have it set to the HP1 setting. I can't access the heat pump right now but I will try to look at it this afternoon. The part where it has the blower is a Janitrol model but the actual AC unit itself I'm not sure.

Am I correct in thinking that unless the heat pump is in emergency mode there should be no power across the heating coils right above the blower?

I have mine connected as follows:

O=Orange
Y=Yellow
Y2=N/C
G=Green
RC/RH=Red
C=Blue
W/2=Not sure
W/E=Not sure
B=Not sure
6=N/C
L=N/C

The instructions state to place a jumper wire between W2 and W/E if you do not have a heat strip wire for each. When you have a heat demand greater than 3 degrees it will energize W2, which is the strip above your blower.

What I did was disconnected both emergency heating coils and turned the heat on. The unit just blows ambient air and it doesn't feel warm at all. But, like I said before, whether I have normal heat or emergency mode selected, the heating coils have 240VAC acrosss them.
