help, my heat went of last night so I called the gas company, when the tec arrived he said it was the heat exchanger and that I needed to replace the furnace, he told me that on the left side of the burner the gas was floating and this was an indication that the heat exchanger was gone....how do I tell if in fact the exchanger is bad....can it be repaired....or could it be that the left burner needs to be cleaned....moneys tight and this guy double parked his van....and was gone in 10 minutes

visually inspect heat exchanger with a flashlight and mirror. if you see holes or rust spot it's usually time for a new HE. If the burner flame is being blown around that is also a sign of a bad HE

ok....there are four burners...the one all the way on the left was being blown....but I have it on now and it seems to have settled down....could it be that the left burner needs to be cleaned.....he was here 5 minutes....its hard for me to believe he made that determination so quickly one more thing...the burner on the left was not consistant burning from front to back...almost rolling so to speak

How old is the furnace? Older usually means higher probability of bad heat exchanger. If you are mechanically inclined, clean the burners and see if the flames are stable. If you still notice that one burner's flame is blowing differently than all the others, call another tech and show him the burner. Then, if he says it's a bad heat exchanger, have him SHOW you the defect (if any) in the heat exchanger.

What is the make and model # and serial # of the unit. And age. Some of us old timers have probably seen your unit and may know it's history and where to look for problems. Don't take it lightly, it could be producing CO from bad combustion. Get 2 detectors. One for your bedroom and one for the furnace room.

Apparently they had a bad batch of heat exchangers which had compression rings which failed as well as lots of cracking issues. Best to get it checked thoroughly by someone who is not in such a hurry. Find the poor guy a parking spot first. Some of our other techs may have seen them also. I go back almost 30 yrs in this biz. Got wrenches older than some of my apprentices.
