how do you light a gas fired gravity furnance that does not have a thermocouple? and can a thermocouple or safety device be added?

You could use a mercury flame sensor or saftey pilot switch to add this saftey feature. If you have the millivolt deal and want a thermocouple, there are thermocouple/junction block adapters you could use.

Post some pics of it on Photobucket and put the links here. I suspect it is an old, old millivolt system which is almost obselete. Has a pilot generator which when cooled down/no flame stops producing the electricity for the burner. If it is that old the heat exchanger is probably in poor shape and should be properly checked for safety, cracks etc. Terribly in-efficient also.
