I have a 5 year old 3.5 ton Carrier packaged unit and last year it began to blow warm when I started it in the summer. Technician came out, put 3lbs of freon in, changed the blower speed from low to medium and said that it looked like the capacitor that started the compressor was leaking a bit of oil and probably was about ready to go. Ran fine all summer and now here we are again this year and when I start it, warm air again. When I went up to clean the outside coil and maintenance this year, after only five minutes of run time and not blowing any cold air, the compressor was ver, very hot to the touch? My question is, should I try the capacitor and hope for an easy fix? Could my 3 lbs of juice be gone again? Lastly, is it normal for the compressor to get that hot?

Thanks in advance

Try the cap, but keep in mind leaks don't fix themselves.

JoJo, thanks for the reply. I'm not sure there was ever a leak, no evidence by sight. Maybe the charge was just low since install? Also, other than obviously disconnecting the power source, do I need to de-energise the Cap before I replace it?

Thanks again

If the compressor is hot, you do not have enough refrigerant in the system. Do not believe it is a cap issue. 3 lbs of R22 is a lot to add. Need tech to do a leak search.

I doubt a 5 year old unit has been low for 5 years. Face it, you,ve got a leak. I wouldn't run that until charge is replaced as you can blow your compressor. And you should get leak fixed like jojo said, leaks don't fix themselves.
