We live in Houston, TX so air conditioning is a necessity. We purchased a 14 SEER Trane unit 12 years ago plus a 10 year parts and labor warranty. Thank goodness!! Everything has been replaced on the condenser unit and we have our system serviced twice a year. This year during the regular scheduled service we were told the silver ...... was falling apart and to add freon would only accelerate the problem. This means that when the weather turns 98 with 100% humidity, we would lose air. I could not believe a unit would deteroriate that quickly. I contacted Trane and received the reply that my comments would be forwarded to the appropriate people. I no longer see the point of purchasing the best if it is so unreliable. The original contractor unit lasted longer!!

And they say its hard to stop a trane............If you wanted the best you should have bought a lennox

Tranes are well known for leaking coils, noisy compressors and overall shity construction.

Yep its a shame. a car from 20 years ago could still be running but a car from 10 years ago is toast, if you are driving a 1998 and disagree your head gasket is about to go.
12 years is an average life for refrigerators or drier or ac unit 8 years by the ocean..... ahhhh I love the ocean.LOL Im an AC contractor near the Atlantic.

I do however think you should fire your AC guy, adding freon will not escilate the problem. If it gets to a point where alot of the spines are falling off the coil than the efficiency will drop. I think the leak is at the copper aluminum joint on the coil, Gas it up, it will last a month or a year, replacing the coil is too expensive for a 12 year old unit. so if its a major leak or more than 10 % loss of coil fins replace it.

Be good to your fellow man not nice there is a difference.
