I have an older (1992) Intercity 2T outside furnace/ac combo unit that needs a new heat exchanger due to some holes and seam splits. I'm opting to do this rather than replace the unit due to financial reasons and the fact that the rest of the components are working just fine. Just looking at the exchanger it appears fairly simple to replace. However, I would like to know the do's and dont's before tackling this project such as how to seal it, things to watch for, etc. Thanks much!

Actually I find HE replacement on a package unit easier than on a furnace more room to work and you are outside and not in a closet or attic and yes you need to keep track of screws use high temperature caulk on all mating surfaces and reassemble in the exact reverse order of disassembly as that will help you keep track of the way it is suuposed to look get started in the morning because you do not want to stop this job in the middle

I assume you're talking about a "package" type unit. This, my friend, is an awful job, for even the most seasoned pro. It is awful for a "regular" furnace, let alone a packaged deal-- but enough with that, as it is possible. The do's would be to (1) have a pro do it, (2) have an area (magnetic if poss) to put all of your screws etc, (3) have extra gaskets and sealant. The dont's would include don't get ahead of yourself, don't start the job until you have total confidence you can complete it. Best of luck to you.

Mark and label everything as you disassemble it. Since you don't have a diagram of the assembly, you should have an easier time reassembling. If something doesn't want to move, don't force it. Try and see why it's stuck.
