"Creating a "zone", heat pump question" , posted Mon 21 Apr 09:20user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

Hello.

I have a Trane 3 ton heat pump/A/C unit. My first question is that my home is two floors and the downstairs gets very hot/cold while the upstairs remains the opposite. I was wondering how do (and what do i need) to set up a zone for the upstairs with a seperate thermostate. (I am not afraid to do my own ducting).

Also I live in Jersey and it drops in the winter sometimes to 10 degrees. Is it efficient to use my heat pump? I get different answers from everyone.

Heat pumps, that far north-- work as long as its not too cold outside. 10 degress outdoor ambient is too cold for it. Once the outdoor temp gets to below freeze level, the HP just plain doesn't work as efficient. Now the technical answer to your question is that a heat pump will work as long as there is heat in the air to be extracted, i.e., down to ZERO but lets be practical here.
Zoning is fine but yes, you need a pro onsite to guide you. If zonign is not done right, you can get into a lot of mold problems etc.

Below 30 and a heat pump can't keep up with your heating needs. To do dust zoning requires a very good understanding of your exact house duct system. Yes, it's possible. But you need someone onsite to tell you how. A simpler solution, dependng on equipment age, might be two systems.
