I am looking at two systems to replace my current heating and AC in my house. One is a standard Gas heat scroll compressor A/C, the other is a hybrid unit where there is a heat pump outside (also a scroll)and a gas furnace inside.
The cost difference is $800, is it worth it???
Sales people like it, and tech people like it (probably because it is new technology), but does the cost justify the means? My next door neighbor got a hybrid, she says the gas went down and the electric went up, with little change in the bill year over year. Sales people say that I should see a 3 year payback, is that a reasonable number?

The dual fuel system is not new technology, but yes in my opinion the system is worth the price. You can use the heat pump to heat until the system cannot keep up the load and then turn to the gas for heating. The way prices are going right now, electric is definiately cheaper than gas. As for the recoup of cost, that is only an estimate, but from what I am seeing, the cost difference is neglible. Go for the dual fuel system.
