When thermostat is set to "heat",the fan runs but no heat is produced. It does not matter whether the fan is set to "on" or "auto", it just continues to run. The furnace apparently does not ignite. When the thermostat is set to "cool", it is the same thing. The fan just continues to run, no matter whether it is set to "on" or "auto", and not cool air is produced. In both cases, only room temperature air is forced through the vents. Is this a bad thermostat? This is an older Sears a/c unit and an older Bryant Furnace.

Open limit or blown transformer. Check AC control wires for damage if transformer is gone.

Wondering,
Where can I find the transformer? What does it look like? Can I replace it myself? What does it cost to replace it, either myself or by a HVAC service tech? Thanks for your reply.

Don't know transformer location without knowing the furnace. Play safe and get a service tech in, something caused your problem. If the furnace is old heat exchanger has to be checked just for safety sake.
