I 'm looking into getting a new system for my home. I'm considering a geothermal heat pump system but I’m having a hard time finding anyone in my area that installs them. One company recommended the 23 SEER frigidaire iQ drive complete-comfort system. Is this system more efficient than a geothermal heat pump system? One thing that I don’t like about the Frigidaire is that it uses heat strips for the heat instead of a heat pump. There are no natural gas lines in my neighborhood. In Winter Haven, Florida we don’t run the heat to much. For the month or so that it does run though I’m afraid those heat strips will eat up most of the savings made during the summer. In defense of the frigidaire unit, I do have a solar water heater system that produces about 95%(verified by a sub meter) of my hot water, so there would be little or no savings from the GTHP there. Would it be possible to use a water coil fed by an additional solar collector for heat with the heat strips as a last resort backup? Could the solar make the fridigaire more efficient?

My objective is long term energy savings for both environmental and economic reasons.
Any HVAC pros with comments? :)

Ok, Al said he thinks the frigidaire system will be more efficient and probably lower installation costs. Maybe you can find another brand that is available with heat pumps. Carrier makes a nice 19 seer infinity heat pump system which is very efficient and sweet. Al's not sure about the solar questions(he doesn't use his) but if those panels can provide enough hot water to heat the house on cold days then why not? A solar heat guy would know best.
