I need to replace the motor for the outdoor fan on my RUUD heat pump. The original motor is an Emerson with 3 wires (brown, orange, and black). The capacitor for it is a circular 3MFD with three prongs labeled FAN, HERM, and C. The brown wire from the motor is connected to the FAN connection on the capacitor. There is a purple wire connected at the HERM connector that goes to the Copeland Scroll compressor. The C connector has a red wire running to a terminal block. The replacement motor is an A.O. Smith. The label plates are within the specs except the capacitor that was included is an oval 7.5MFD two prong not an identical three prong. The motor itself has 5 wires (brown, brown/white, white, black, and green[obviously the ground]). Now can I still use this motor with the original capacitor only connecting the brown wire to the same on the capacitor and just leave the brown/white dead? I know that the orange and white wires would be the same and of course the two blacks are the same. Thanks

Leave the old capacitor wired to Herm and C since it still serves your compressor.

Remove only the 2 wires that went to your old motor from the dual capacitor.

Wire your new motor to your new capacitor as shown in the 4 wire diagram. (Since you have a heat pump the black will probably connect to your defrost control instead of directly to your contactor)

"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.
