Hi all. I recently bought a couple of Climatouch CT0-7TC-21 touchscreen thermostats to replace some pretty old Honeywell mercury thermostats. I have a pretty simple system, only a single gas furnace, no heat pumps, no cooling, etc.

In situations like this, I understood that it was quite simple to hook up the thermostats, a simple two wire system would suffice. Out of the wall (and no where to be found in the basement!) are a black and white wire. I connect the white wire to the W input (for furnace) and black to the R input (for power).

The thermostat powers up and looks great! The only problem is that whenever the heat is turned on, the thermostat starts clicking and flashing in a crazy fashion.

I tried calling tech support for the thermostat, but its just an automated message system that said that I'm in need of a common wire. As I only have the two cables coming out of the wall and no common blue wire, did I just blow my money on three of these very expensive thermostats that are now useless?

Thanks very much!

The answer is that the thermostats will not work without a common (ground) connection. Don't know if you would be able to return them.

I called tech support for the Climatouch pad and they tell me that the thermostat won't work without a common wire for 24v as opposed to ground. So,... there's already a 24v wire (red) and a wire for the gas furnace (white), where would this second 24v common wire come from or be connected to? Would there need to be a second transformer on my furnace? (Weil-McLain).

Also, all the floors (1, 2 and 3) have 3 wires coming out of the wall. However, at the furnace, the colors don't match and there are only 2 wires. Some contractor came to my house and said that he would need to charge me to run new wiring,... Is this the best option if there are already 3 wires coming out of the wall? Also, where would he even connect the 3rd wire to from the new wiring, as there's just 1 transformer I believe on the furnace...

Thanks all. This is killing me. Thank goodness its going to be warm from now on. The past couple of nights have been in the 40's and there's been no heat as there's no thermostat! :(

You might be able to pull a new wire between your furnace and your stat.

Thank you both. What about the other option of "placing a 270 ohm 10 watt resistor at the furnace between Y and C"? This is a suggested workaround for the clicking noise suggested by the manufacturer.

As an aside, unfortunately, I cannot return the items as they were purchased on eBay...

I am not a fan of that resistor technique. I would pull wire or get a different stat.

anybody? I'd really appreciate any advice as the contractor will be here tomorrow and i'd like to try this myself instead...

I still can't figure this out, so I have no choice but to revert to the 250ohm 10watt resistor solution in place of a common wire.

Can anyone tell me what the detriments are of using the resistor? Does it shorten the life of the furnace or the thermostats?

Thanks!
