We have a setup that will have air handlers in the cellar and air condensers on the roof. The distance between the two is about 60 vertical feet and 40 horizontal feet. As we understand things, the lines have been installed with several traps to avoid oil build-up. And when we install the condensers and handlers they will install a long line set. Hopefully this sounds right.

The architectural/engineering plans call for a two zone system and the following Trane units: 2TTX5048A1000A and 2TTX5036A1000A. (Each zone is for about 1000 square feet with tall ceilings.)

Here's the trouble. The building is doing a bunch of renovations and the new central air system is part of that. Unfortunately, the original contractor was a disaster and has been fired. We now have a construction manager and are trying to evaluate which existing subcontractors to keep. Add to this mix an engineer who's advice seems more appropriate for commercial projects than our residential project and you can see we are a bit stuck and looking for some 3rd party validation and help assessing our situation.

Here are our questions:
1) Are the above Trane units appropriate and does Trane makes a long line set that will work these?

2) The site is not completely closed up. Given this, what else do we need to confirm to make sure the system will work properly?

3) The HVAC subs seem to have a preference for Carrier over Trane. We are not sure we can easily switch without re-filing with the New York City Building Department and so prefer to stay with Trane. Are the HVAC guys right and should we be reconsidering this?

4) What other questions should we be asking to decide about the HVAC guys and insure we'll wind up with a reliable system?

Thanks TONS for any and all help!

Buy a Trane System much better system... Most line sets are 50 - 60 feet long,,, Also it's not the footage of the line set it's the size needed .. What tonage is the equipment ?

1. do not put an R-22 system in a new construction or remodel.
410-A is the new and soon to be only avalaible refridgerant,(remember how expensive cars were when you still had the old R-12)

2. I would stick with the trane and the climate tuff compressor.

3 this set up is not ideal. have the contractor show you the lineset size needed by the manufacturer or in the instructions. oil traps are good. With all the turns and horizontal runs I'll bet the line set is more than 60 ft. they are 7/8 and 3/8 for the 036 and 1 1/8 and 3/8 for the 050, I think that over 75 feet or a certin rise then the size is suppost to go up to a larger.

4. Carrier is good, they want carrier because carrier will drop them if they install other brands too much.

Be good to your fellow man not nice there is a difference.
