carrier 58SX series 170

unit will cycle on and off without reaching temp.
unit will ignite then as soon as blower kicks on burner cuts out
hi- limit switch bypassed to test - same issue
could this be a fan limit switch ?

MOST LIKELY YOU HAVE A CRACKED HEAT EXCHANGER. CHECK at furnacerecalls.com for the information. Carrier has a recall class action lawsuit in effect.

Most likely a pressure switch opening due to a hole in the heat exchanger which= you need a new furnace. Also possible it's a bad circuitboard.

i am hoping to eliminate the following as possibilities?
could be:
roll-out switch
flame sensor
pilot light needs slight adjustment to be sensed
fan limit switch

Why would it be that switch? It wouldn't. Face it, you need a new furnace.

Sorry, it doesn't work like that. You can't just open up your furnace, look for parts that are cheap and easy to replace, and then assume that replacing said parts will fix the problem. You gave us symptoms and we gave you honest advice. I could be wrong. What do I know anyway, I'm just an HVAC service technician.

actually i have subsequently had a certified carrier tech advise as to the correct diagnosis. your advice is completely incompetant based on the symptoms given. You (not us or we) need to get a real job and not masquerade as a hvac tech. this forum is a joke.
i hope future posters are not so ill-advised on this forum. The idea is to replace parts not the furnace

Actually I am a NATE certified tech who works for a Carrier Factory authorized dealer. I'm also right. Besides it's never the switch so when that partschanging hacker replaces your stupid switch you both will feel stupid when problem re-occurs. I promise it will. Also you will have more callbacks on your furnace than I have in a whole year. Notice that I'm not resorting to namecalling. That is because I'm quite satisfied that you are now taking bad advice and you deserve it for judging my professionalism, even though you clearly know nothing about hvac. Probably not much else either.

the statement that you are always right and that the switch never is defective confirms your incompetance. OK SO YOU ARE THE ONLY HVAC TECH WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING - I GET IT

ignorance is bliss

DW, I don't know much about farm animals. How do you like my new signature? It's from A Christmas Story.

Duke,

Is "A Christmas Story" the name of the book?
My girl friend is a librarian and buys a lot of books. What page is "furnace fighter" on?

BTW, Do you check for leaks with a Duct Blaster? I took a PG&E energy class yesterday and they taught us how to use one.
Took another class today on ventilation. The codes are changing. Going to require 24/7 mechanical ventilation installed.

Do you guys do the Blower Door Test much in CT?
PG&E has a tool program for checking ducts and infiltration. Average duct leakage here is 20% - 35%. Can you believe that?

They're offering so many classes for contractors, it's energy city. Lots of rebates for the rate payer.

Took an PG&E A/C charging class from a guy who built a 3500 SF house in Redding that his customer heats and cools for $341 a YEAR!
The Department of Energy checked it out and it is true.
Heat = hot water heater forced air. AC = air cooled condenser. Attic buried ducts in R-50. He is an HVAC and insulation contractor. He guaranteed the operating cost in advance. The home owner runs it at 72,72 degrees.

When things ease up a little, people might not be afraid to spend their tax cut on home comfort and conservation.

Be comfortable and be safe.

Good night from CA

Are you saying that when we try to help a homeowner, we are not really giving him the nuclear codes?

You'll be singing a different tune after you replace that switch. As far as your last comment, I'm glad you see it my way.
